AzizProject 501c3 aims to inspire, nurture, and celebrate the fulfillment of artistic expression. We are dedicated to the utilization of art-making and cross-cultural understanding through multi and interdisciplinary arts programs.

OUR VISION

From Los Angeles to Senegal, AzizProject propels generations of artists of color with educational programs, access to artist networks, and resources that support young artists and curators in achieving professional art goals.

Aziz Diagne

Founder & Master Artist

Aziz Diagne is the visionary founder of the AzizProject and an internationally recognized master artist whose work bridges tradition and innovation. Born and trained in Senegal, Aziz developed his artistic voice through a deep engagement with West African cultural forms and a lifelong commitment to creative expression. His artistry spans painting, printmaking, and mixed media, with pieces exhibited and collected around the world. As Founder and Master Artist of the AzizProject, Aziz brings not only his technical mastery but also his belief in the transformative power of art to inspire, educate, and connect communities. Through his leadership, the project reflects his dedication to nurturing creativity as a force for cultural dialogue, empowerment, and change.

John Simmons, ASC

Board Member

John Simmons is an Emmy-winning cinematographer, photographer, painter, collage artist, and professor whose creative vision spans decades. Born and raised in Chicago, he began photographing for The Chicago Defender at age 15 and later studied fine art at Fisk University before earning his master’s in cinematography from USC. An ASC member since 2004—having served as Vice President and co-chair of the ASC Vision Committee—Simmons brings deep experience in television (including an Emmy for Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn) and documentary work. His still photography and collage art have been exhibited in major galleries and are part of the permanent collections of institutions including the Getty Museum, the High Museum, the David C. Driskell Center, and Harvard. John has also served as an adjunct faculty member at UCLA for over 25 years and is a committed mentor to emerging visual storytellers. He is a vocal advocate for greater diversity in cinema, contributing his leadership and vision to industry initiatives.

Tiffany Payne Troutman

Board Member

Tiffany Payne Troutman is a seasoned workforce strategist with a wide-ranging career in aerospace, defense, government, tech, and sports. With a keen focus on fostering inclusive growth and social impact, she brings a unique blend of expertise and passion to every endeavor. Currently serving as the Vice President of Talent Management & Workforce for LA28, Tiffani focuses on building a sustainable talent infrastructure for the upcoming LA Olympic & Paralympic Games. Her work in and outside of the office is dedicated to advancing groups historically and contemporarily excluded from industries such as sports, tech, and construction, as highlighted in her article, "The Possibilities for Data Centers are Infinite When the Focus is on People", where she discusses the importance of narrowing the digital divide and integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion into workplace design. Beyond her professional endeavors, Tiffani’s dedication to community service runs deep. Notably, Tiffani is a staunch advocate for intersections of mentorship and the arts, particularly in empowering youth. She believes in the transformative power of the arts to inspire creativity, foster confidence, and unlock potential in young people.

Dr. Gregory Canillas

Board Member

Dr. Gregory “Doc” Canillas is a psychologist, professor, and CEO of Soul 2 Soul Global, where he leads relationship-focused programs such as Love Wins! LGBTQ+ Couples Retreats. A co-author of the American Psychological Association’s Guidelines for Psychological Practice with Sexual Minority Persons, he has written extensively on diverse relationships and families. His career spans clinical practice, nonprofit leadership, and teaching, with expertise in trauma, relationships, and community health. Currently an Associate Professor of Forensic-Clinical Psychology at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, Dr. Canillas is also a frequent international presenter, published poet, and lifelong advocate for helping people live their best lives.

Samuel Herod

Board Chair

Samuel retired in 2012 after a 35-year career in the entertainment and museum fields, most recently with the J. Paul Getty Trust. Since 2003, he has been a dedicated CASA of Los Angeles volunteer, advocating for youth in foster care and celebrating their educational achievements. His leadership has earned national recognition, including the HALO Award and CASA’s Child Advocate of the Year. He also serves on boards supporting youth development and enjoys tennis, fishing, and time with his family.

Dr. Loren M. Hill

Chief Financial Officer

Dr. Loren M. Hill serves as Chief Financial Officer of the AzizProject, bringing expertise in strategic planning, financial stewardship, and nonprofit growth. With a career spanning higher education, coaching, and leadership development, she is committed to advancing opportunities for youth and emerging artists in underserved communities. In addition to her role at AzizProject, Loren is a consultant, educator, and podcast host focused on equity, excellence, and sustainable impact.
